Joanne Bull, founder of Opal Gems, is a Cheshire based jewellery designer, working from a studio in a renovated cotton mill in Stockport.
Her designs are created using traditional bench making techniques using sterling silver, elements of 9ct gold and semi-precious gemstones. Joanne is also a lapidarist, this means that she is able to cut and polish her own gemstones.
One of Opal Gems signature designs is jewellery incorporating milk sea glass from the North East of England. Joanne is inspired by natural elements and working with milk sea glass and its natural sea washed forms often determines the final designs for her collections. Collections include Ocean Gems, Tidal and Shore.
With a background in Art History, Joanne finds inspiration in many forms of art, be it a sculpture or artwork by a famous artist. One design she has created is a necklace based on Matisse’s ‘The Snail’ and she is currently working on a piece based around Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
